Even for day paddles I am going through the same list. Gear, Weather, Water, Human Factor. Combined with route. On day paddles, its the same list, same concerns, but very quick. <br /><br />Even if I am paddling on a lake, I may turn on the weather radio to hear a wind report. <br /><br />And yes, practice, practice, practice.
